Nick’s peculiar interest in woodwork strikes a chord…

“Have you ever thought of working here?  We’re advertising for a lay chaplain.”

These words, spoken 30 years ago over lunch at the Christian conference and holiday centre, Scargill House, North Yorkshire, led directly to my ordination three years later, and eventually to Hazel’s as well.

I returned this month and sat once more in the chapel thinking back over the years.  I’d always known that the altar was constructed using dovetailed joints (a peculiar interest of mine) but I suddenly realised that I serve now in a parish with a dovetailed altar (take a look). Who says God doesn’t have a sense of humour…
